Hi All

I've been doing freelance web/programming/graphic design work for a number of years now, however it's always been for friends rather than on a completely professional level.  When I do work for friends, I usually ask them to pay me how much they think the work I've done is worth.

Now though, I've just started doing some work for a Consultancy firm on a completely professional level.  So far, I've designed their company logo and designed a small "mini-site" to act as a kind of holding page until I complete their full website.

I'm having trouble deciding how much to charge them.  The logo took 3 days, including time to discuss various ideas with the client and refine different designs into the final product.  The mini-site took another day (again, including all discussions with the client).

Could any of you give me an idea of what sort of price I should charge for something like this.  If you could give examples of similar projects you have completed that would also be a huge help.

Wow, you mean you designed them a logo and a site without even discussing a price or hourly rate?! If so, wow.. that's pretty nuts lol! You should have your rate established before you do anything at all...

Starters would be $15 an hour and up from there depending on your experience and skillset.

No problem... honestly I don't even understand how this company took you on without asking you your hourly rate or something... I mean you could turn around now and bill $100 an hour if you wanted and they wouldn't have a leg to stand on as they never asked your rate to begin with.

Neither do I to be honest! I took the job just because it was something to do more than anything. I'm trying to build my portfolio up as much as possible so I just said yes without thinking. The guy seems really impressed with what I've done (even though the logo is definitely not my usual style lol), and he's said there's a lot more work he wants me to do if I'm interested. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze enough money out of him over the job to get me a nice new Macbook Air and a few other gadgets!

I believe you're doing that because you're enjoying it, which is great (I think).
However, you must also consider the time, money, and effort you are exerting on a certain project. You should at least get "something" from them after doing something for their company...
