I am trying to create some pixel characters in photoshop emulating the style from emogame.com ... however after drawing them i need them to be made bigger; and when i scale them they are fine; but after clicking "apply" become blurred (apologies; i don't know the correct term for this). Is there any way around this?

When typing with the type tool you will see a box 'aa' its next to the box where you change the size of your font 'tt'
Anyways, set aa to none, and type your text as usual. After you're done you should be able to scale it to any size without loosing that 'pixel' look.
That is if by characters you meant letters.

If you meant characters as in people, try drawing them with the pencil tool other than a brush because brushes sometimes have soft edges that would go blurry when scaled. I just drew a test character with the pencil tool and scaled it 4x its original size and it still retained the pixel-ness. <_<

Yeah; it was people I meant. I'm still getting the same sort of thing when using pencil tool it's softening the characters up; there must be something in my settings I'd assume

hmmm perhaps so, Im not too sure what would be causing the problem however.
Anybody out there with any ideas on Dan's pixel dilema?

its because you have to scale the image by the two's so 1 pixel will become 2. if you scale in any other way, 1 pixel becomes blurred because in some way it tries to become 1.5 or 1.3 pixels. u get it?

yeah; I understand what you mean, but im scaling by 200% with constrained properties... I'm assuming that makes each pixel 4, rather than a decimal?

i just tested it myself, it is an odd one.
what tool are you using? i was using the transform tool. but eh. if i find some other way, i'll post it.
and mm. are you trying to expand a layer or an entire image?

i've been using edit> transform; then changing the values at the top from 100% to 200% with constrained properties. thats on a single layer; but i also tried image> image size then doubling but its the same problem.

I actually figured this out not too long ago:

When you're in photoshop go to 'Edit » Preferences » General' and where it says "Image Interpolation" in the drop down menu change it to "Nearest Neighbor (faster)".

This is for PSCS so it may be different for any other version you may be using. That will do what you're talking about though since I had this same problem before.

Hope I helped ^_^

Ah yes, definately. The way sq3r says works.

I cant remember how I did it miself thou, or if I even did because my test character (as I mentioned up there) was a square pixel face with square eyes, so when I scaled it I didnt notice a blur, but trying out different pixel people and such I now see the blur. :D

Anyways thanks for the tip sq3r ^_^ now we all know.

No problem, this is actually something I think adobe should make a lot more clear because it's pretty important for pixel art and all that stuff. I only had to figure it out because I was resizing a small phpBB smiley and it was crappy when it was big.

Hooray for Photoshop Help files!

Well MS paint isn't good for that because you can't reall constrain proportions when you resize, and it would be all messy.

^^^ Sure you can. You have a pixel image... example: 25px x 25px, all you do is resize your canvas to 250px x 250px and then when you resize it... it will be ppeerrffeeccttt... ive done it a few times. Example, bomberman for my MSN display picture :P
