Hey all. Just a quick question.

I know it sounds stupid and all, and I ask this question cause I have no experience with IPB forums. But here goes:

Is it possible to get an IPB forum for free?

Thanks in advance. ;)

There is a way to get anything for fre....doesn't mean it's legal though. I believe IPB1.3.1 is available for free. IPB2+ is not although there are many people who got it before they made it unavailable for free. (The older version under the old trial license.)

IPB is NOT free.
Anyone who redistributes IPB (even 1.3) is breaking the law and can be charged for criminal behavior.

Thought so. But InFnit is saying that it WAS free before, but now isn't. So if you did get the forum before it isn't illegal, right?

If you got 1.* or 2.0.0 trial (very vulnerable) it is legal. Any versions after that were never available for free.
You can't download any of the 1.* series anymore! If anyone claims to have it and wants to send you he is breaking the license!

I said most ways of getting it is illegal unless you got it in the time it was available for download under "trial" license.

I got it about a week before they closed it down - still think it was a bad move. But as they say; bad publicity is good publicity.

There is still a free (limited) trial available.
It is encoded and has members / posts / topics limits.
Still, if you have a small community it might work! If you have a bigger community, you should be able to gather $60 from donations for a license.

Use something that doesn't cost.

I am using phpBB at the moment. Converting my phpBB forum into an IPB forum costs right? I think it was $60 US or something.

When you buy a license they will convert the board for free the first time ;)

So I pay for a new board, and just ask them to convert my phpBB forum into an IPB forum so that everything gets saved (topics, posts, categories, etc)?

If this is right, then that's AWESOME.

Or you can use a free converter

Could I use the free converter on the phpBB forum NOW? Or pay for the license first?

Ok. I will contact them via e-mail, post a topic on Invisionize and maybe I'll get some quick information.

I told my mate just now and he said that it will only convert the MySQK database instead of the whole forum.
