How can I put a flat image into a 3d sphere?

I have to ask you a huge favor: can you give me the name of the softwares that make digital impression on flat figures (images or photos) in spherical surface? If possible the web site of the manufacturer too.

The software that I have in mind must follow the next procedures, in my knowledge for a balloon (giant balloon, round shape) with the diameter of 10 foot (3 meters) to be divided in 8 gores (gore: football-shaped segments):

1) accept the flat image in the format gif, jpeg, and others;

2) transform this flat image into spherical shape of 10 foot, in this case;

3) divide this image in 8 sections e.g., making 8 ellipsis, that should measure 13 foot height for 3.3 foot width, approximately;

4) each of these ellipsis should have edges that will mark the cutting. At this moment, the ellipsis will be printed at a digital plotter. After the section been made this pieces will be welded, and making the spherical image on the balloon.

A good reference of this problem:

bruno.postle.net, section ip-slicer.

Bruno takes a solution, but that is limited and complex.

P.S. Please, excuse my poor English!

Thanks! ;)
