My guess at what you do is...
1. fill your background with your desired colour
2. make a new document about 6 x 6 pixels and have a transparent background
3. Get the pencil tool and set the size to 1 pixel
4. Mark out one part of the pattern you want, so if you want one likesharpknife i guess you just draw one to four diamonds
5. Then click edit > define pattern and give it a name
6. Go back to your original document and make a new layer over the the top of your background and click edit > fill and choose pattern then select the pattern you just made

Obvioudly thats not a brilliant tutorial, but i was just explaining the principle of it...

Tell me how you get on...

Just make a small new image in Photoshop, about 6x6pixels I presume, and take your pencil tool at 1 px and put a dot in the top left corner and bottom right corner.
Then define that as a pattern, and fill it into a background.
