I've tried rendering things with transparency, but c4d has a default black background...

Ok, this is how you do it:
When you have your object ready for rendering, go Render > Render Settings.
Once your in the render settings, do this:

Once thats done, go to the "output" setting in render settings and chage the resolution to whatever you want. Then, go render > render to picture veiwer. Once the render is done in picture veiwer, go File > Save Picture as (in the picture veiwer window) and make sure its saved as a targa. Than open in PS and all you have is the render.

Make sure you save it as a TARGA with the exact settings FaultySanity gave you.

leave the bg in black and use the magic wand is PS to cut out the black background.
note that if your render is too dark, the wand may cut undesired parts. (eg. dark areas)

or you save it in a .psd file with " Alpha " ckecked.
The you open it in PotoShop. You do " Window -› Channels"
The you select Alpha and your render should be white.
Then you do Ctrl + Click on tje Alpha channel.
Then you set is back to RGB.
Then Ctrl + C
Then you make a new image in PS with transparant background.
And finaly Ctrl + V
Hope it helped
