I dont know any free ones but you really should consider getting fruit loops 5, its a |337 program.

Audacity is pretty good for editing and recording.

As mentioned, FL Studio 5 (Fruity loops) is a great prog. It's what I use for studio quality production, and it's never let me down. It's very complicated for new users, but gets very easy very soon. I definately recommend it.
Even version 4 is good. Anything earlier, and you don't get wave input.

I like using Adobe audition thats a pretty good recording program.
