id go for a simpler, more professional looking design, with some graphics, but not to graphics heavy

I would agree, especially if you're going with a layout for a web design company, it should be appealing, but light on graphics because the loadtime and just about every other part of it should be optimized since it shows you know what you're doing! Good luck with your company!

forgot to mention this, make the navigation easy and simple to use, since it is for a web design company, but that should go without saying for any website.

BTW everyone what res. do you use for your websites. I mean the pixels on PhotoShop

About 775 pixels is what I use, it fits on 800x600 nicely without the scrollbars and you have a small border on each side which you can fill a slightly contrasting shade for effect

as i'm curious, what res. is P2L

P2L is roughly 1000 pixels wide, which fits perfectly on 1024x768. 1024x768 is the resolution used by the majority of the people who browse Pixel2Life.com, as shown by a statistics analysis

I usually have it at about 600 so I can try and use the space in an organized fashion. I always make sure that my designs can be fluid and expand as much as possible so that I don't have to use evil iFrames.
Not to plug my template or anything (don't comment on it, there's a gallery topic already) here is one I made, saved directly from Photoshop with no slicing done yet.

As you can see I've outlined my major sections, and stuck in some filler text just to make sure everything flows properly. It's laid out in such a way that it can expand downward and still look okay.
Here is my final result, sliced and coded. Again I want no comments, this is for illustrative purposes only.

The page flows downwards just fine, and all of the areas are good. To achieve this, just create sections that can repeat as the page moves down, or in my case have the content area a solid color and use CSS to make a border around it.
If you need more help, just reply here and I'd be glad to try and explain it more
