Expanding Website/Tables Beside Eachother

I made my layout and everyhting and im now totally stuck. I Dont know how people get thier templates to expand evenly without mesin up...wen i did it i used layers and the content box just went right over the bottom without the bottom expanding with it. Also i see that tables can somehow go beside eachother...true? If so how. Sorry to bug ya'll but i really wana code my site correctly so i dont get errors after. Im mostly concerned about getting the boxes to expand with the page. Im using the DHTML layers constantly if theres a differnet way to do it i would really like to know how.

to make two tables next to each other, you nest tables. such like below.
<table><tr><td> <table><tr><td></td></tr></table> </td><td> <table><tr><td></td></tr></table> </td></tr></table>

im using dreamweaver...but it doesnt solve my problem...but kschembri help me out
