Have pushed over 2 terrabytes of data today. It's simply impossible to mitigate a DDoS attack of this magnitude without *extremely* expensive and specialized hardware. The machine is still pushing around 35mbps (pushed 95mbps earlier) but things are slowly returning to normal. We have two layers of DDoS protection that are always operational, which are easily capable of mitigating a small DOS or DDoS without any service interruption at all. This, however, was a huge attack.
I have never seen an attack of this magnitude - it's a once in a blue moon event.
You may notice a couple more database or http burps for a couple more hours, but things are looking very good.
I apologize for the inconvenience guys! You have no idea how frustrating it is to sit here for hours, at the mercy of the attack, not to mention losing money every minute that ticks by. Such is the nature of the internet.

Basically the server is flooded with so many connection attempts (thousands per second) that legitimate requests are dropped. A *distributed* attack is one that originates from many, many hundreds (or thousands) of computers - there is virtually no way to mitigate an attack of that scale without an astronomical investment in specialized hardware (geared to mission critical servers).
