SMF is the better of the lot, you have to host yourself.

proboards & Invisionfree they host for you.

Use Invisionfree.Its the best for newbies at forums.
Then you can move onto things like ipb which is much better.

No get phpbb and host it yourself. phpbb is good for adding lots of mods and customizations, thats why i use it. But on other sites, like photoshopvision.com, i used ipb because its more professional. You cant really customize it yourself, except for some good mods you can install like a tms and a downloads manager.

Hay guys I think myBulletinBorad (MyBB for short) is a good and easy to use forum software.

It is free to use and has a great support forum available.

For MyBB goto http://mybboard.com

NOTE: New version of MyBB comming soon. Hopefully lot more Mods and Templates will be released too after the release.

I use phpBB and find it actually quite good, plus since its free theres many mods and such available for it to get what you need.

Anyways a little help with your background Iysha
Admin CP -> Skinning & Styles -> Manage Style Sheets

Find the folowing line:
BODY { font-family: Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000000; margin:0px 10px 0px 10px; background-color:#FFFFFF }

The part you want to change is background-color: #ffffff;

I'd recommend phpBB for starters. Yes, it doesn't have that many cool features, but you can very easily add any feature you can think of! If you have some knowledge of PHP and MySQL, it's very easy to add anything you want to the forum. So I think it is very customizable.

If you mean intergrate with your website then yes it's possible to do.

phpBB can do it as well as SMF I believe and they are both free. For instance lets say you wanted the last 5 members that registered on your forum to show on your website, then you would find the db where member names were stored and on your website refer to that db with a script that got the last 5 members added and then output the data.

phpBB is a very good free forum but it had some security issues although with the new release they might have fixed those problems. From what I've heard, no personal experience, SMF is also very good.
