I arn't in the game programming field myself. But will be soon. I have researched this question a bit. I would however, recommend you but the book:
"C++ Game Programming - Black Book"
This, of cause, is if your doing C++ Game Programming. The book comes with a free engine, and tells you how to program one.
Just a thought, you might like to check it out though.

those are really good game engines, you can do a lot of things with only few lines of code
there's a development comunity in Codersworkshop that can help you when i get stuck

Are you talking about Michael Abrash's black book? Anyway it's a great book and I would reccomand that interested programmer read some of its content."C++ Game Programming - Black Book"
