I’m in exactly the same boat as you, just starting out; I found a brilliant book called 3DS Max: Fundamentals And Beyond, just £20 from Amazon, which takes you from absolute beginner to competent modeller, this book is the official training material from Discreet and is worth its weight in gold.

But just to get you started, the controls for navigating your scene are in the very bottom right of your screen.

click on the camera and then at the top there is a bar...or should be... with something like a + sign with arrow heads on all the lines. then use the gizmo that shows up to move it left right up down etc.

im assuming thats what you need...to move the camera?

its about the same for any 3d program, c4d 3ds max and maya all use similar navigation controls

of course they can be a bit different, to scroll in 3ds max its just mmb, but in maya its alt+mmb, but its all very similar
