Hello ,

I have to create a project this year .. and i havwe started learning visual basic .. all I want to create is that i really want to know how to make a lan chat program like msn .... well the thing is ...

BackEnd :

All accounts will be customly created by administrator
All chat logs will be saved in database and can only be seen by admin ...
Kick/Ban Feature
Ban Words Features

Front end :

Well in frontend{user end} I need a lot of features like msn messenger that when an ID is created by administrator for user ... The user enter his id and password and logs into the chat client .. where he/she can add other school students by their ID ... When the user is logged in to the chat client .. He see his contact list ..and when he clicks on the user he wants to chat offcourse a chat windows interface opens up where he can nudge a user and send emocitions too ... + offcourse can send him messages easily ...

Well this chat software is just for my school purpose as an fast alternative to chat with friends on lan .. and it will also be my project for next year exams ... :) ...

With this software only School students can chat with each other and supported by lan .. not proxies but user id ..

Please give me a start , link to tutorials , and help with codes ......

The server of this chat messenger , will be located in proxy and not IP because lan support only proxies..

Hope you guys can help me....

thank you

Don't jump the gun...You shouldn't try creating something that exceeds your abilities by far. But search google or here for winsock tutorials. Futhermore www.planet-source-code.com has tutorials and source code on making such programs. BUT DON'T STEAL CODE! You have to explain the code and say how it works and such. And your only cheating yourself.

As ronson said, you're going too advanced. A chat system require AT LEAST 1 year experience and some help from an expert sometimes.

You should instead start by creating games, for example, tic-tac-toe is good example to start.

A chat system will require you to use WinSocks, open, close, lock files. It can be easier to use the file on a network, if you're going to use it online, you'll even need to code a script online that can handle the clients.

Seems easy but it's not...

Yeh Jay it is, but it's very advanced especially if your doing what Pirox wants. I wouldn't create a game instead i'd do something like a libary program or something similar. What i mean is create a program that does data input/output (onscreen and printing) and then save the file to a .DAT file...

For my project at College i'm doing a computer audit and stock room control in VB.NET it's something alot simplar than an MSN 7 type IM client.
