Prolly u musta seen a window blinds theme or longhorn transformation pack theme.
windows XP has a classic look and the XP look...apart from that nothin much can be done wid.
you hafta use a third party proggy like Window Blinds or LTP in order to change the look of ur start menu and icons.
window blinds (not freeware) can be downloaded from
Longhorn Transformation pack can be downloaded from here. this is freeware. but if u dont follow the instructions carefully, it can mess up ur system files.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: hmm...Jus saw this in the desktop programming section. Maybe this isnt what u're lookin for

You can modify these using Window Blinds or Style XP.
Stardock have a whole host of software you can use to completely transform your GUI and desktop. Icons are changed using Object Dock, toolbars using Windows Blinds etc etc. It is free to download the trial and also free to download unlimited skins at Win Customize I never used Style XP but apparently it's easy to use and also free.
hope this helps!!

You can also use widgets on your desktop (not recommended if don't have much RAM).
For example, i've made this desktop with Style XP and Widgets.

A few questions:
1. What's widgets?
2. The method I suggested above - does it work?

1) widgets are small objects you can place on your desktop like the clock, the weather, gmail checker, etc.
2) yes, but what you suggested is to create themes, not a desktop.

I used Desktop X for a while (I think it's made by stardock, but I got the link off of a Devart member's profile), but it crashed my PC every time....

Desktop X is a bad idea actually, you better use Konfabulator which is only the widgets, not a whole desktop that takes all your memory.
