The other day I was told about an experiment, where some one got a 1.5 Litre bottle of diet-coke and added a pack of Extra Stong Trebor mints... And it produced a 5m tall flow of coke. I didn't believe this...

So myself (Ben) and my friend Patrick decided to give it a go! :P

Here goes.

We first set out and brought a two-litre bottle of diet coke and some extra strong trebor mints! We did this without a camera! And we came accross one vital flaw - the mints were too big to go in as whole. So we broke them up, and we got a small flow of coke - no where near 5m tall! ;)

However, after eating a pasty and a cream doghnut we decided we would have another go! So we set out to buy some more ingredients!

We decided we would buy 1.25L of diet coke this time! We also decided to do two experiments so we brought two - as well as some Extra Strong Trebor mints and some smaller polos.

So we went back to Patrick's garden and tried again...

Here we are with everything set up:

We first set off with the polo challenge!

Carefully unwrapping the polos:

We slowly unscrewed the top:

And then got ready to add the mints...

Posted Image

And true to form my camera skills came to be known - and took a rubbish photo - but anyway!

Here is what happened.

Posted Image

This was slightly dissapointing to us - as we expected more - so we added some mints (as we had only used one pack of mints) - and shook it up!

Posted Image

And were dissapointed to find out that not a lot happened!

So we moved onto the Trebor mints!

Posted Image

We then carefully opened the mints...

Posted Image

And as we learned from the first time we did this experiment - the mints are two big - so we used the clever smashing up technique known as grinding them with a blue plastic tennis raquet!

Posted Image

Side note:

All of these 3 photos were taken with a two second stage (sorry for the quality):

Posted Image

Well at least we thought it was funny...

Anyway back on with the experiment!

We added the mints...

Posted Image

We closed the cap and shook the bottle up! :D

And this is what happened:

And then finally stopped reacting at:

Posted Image

We then reverted to see if we could get the 5m by hand, with some pretty spectactular results! :D

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

So we may not have managed 5 metres - but we still had fun! :)

And just to show you guys where we did the experiments here is one final photo!

Posted Image

We also are (maybe) going to try with different mints and different soft drinks - so watch the space! :D

We also need ideas for new 'projects' so let us know!

But does it have any effect what kind of bottle it is? I've been thinking of trying this, but here in Norway we have slightly different bottles, and not 2L but 1,5L.

I have a suggestion, put a whole Mentos pack in a Coke bottle and quickly screw on the cap a quarter turn. Then shake the bottle until the bottle starts deforming. Take the bottle, cap towards the ground, throw the bottle toward the ground. The bottle will either explode or the bottle will take off. The bottles may travel a couple hundred feet.

I never tried this but I saw many videos on Google video about it.
