Hi folks!
I am very pleased that a project that I have tried to get off the ground several times will FINALLY be taking flight over the next week or so, and that is a P2L Newsletter! Starting *hopefully* next week we will begin to offer a sign-up system and a regular emailed newsletter to all subscribers with the latest scoops on P2L, what's coming up, heads up on ongoing contests and other awesome content.
BUT before we start sending out our new publication, I would like to hear from you guys, the community. What would YOU like to see in a regular P2L newsletter? Any and all suggestion gladly received.
Dan
PS. Just to cover the impending questions: No I can't include free back massages or LCD screens with the newsletter.

Hey what about a monthly competition. Maybe a prize could be something like an ad on p2l for 1-2 days. You could also feature new tut's and possibly have a review on new graphic design software and various other programmes.
Just a thought.
Matthew.

Interesting, I'll sign up...but i don't know what i want in it

Of course there should be a mention of the TOTW/SOTW etc, but i guess that's already included...perhaps focus it a lot on "community" activity to try and strengthen the forum etc more than actual tutorials?

You could also say how awesome I am every week... but I guess you have already thought of that and added it to the list
I reckon you should have an interview of one or two of the staff members in each edition... then when you run out of staff members, you can turn to me

or anyone else... lol - start with the people with the most posts here and work down

Just a question: how big are you planning each newsletter to be?

5 latest tutorials on the site, 5 latest forum posts, and mabye some site info like updates and stuff, and then what ever else people can think of.
Instead of the 5 latest forum posts, could it be the 5 most interesting threads or something like that? Or is that getting too lazy? lol

I would like to have a hand-picked Top 5 tutorials of the week in the newsletter, each one with a short but sweet review.
Also, Dan, Respond to my PMs!

seconded. although not neccessarily staff. i would rather see interviews with professionals in different industries from all over the web, from within or outside the community.

I really like the idea of the interviews of industry professionals. Hand picked tutorials would be great and possibly a highlighted tutorial that was exceptional written during the time period. Possibly toss in some community quicky interviews.

Yeah, that's a great idea!!
I'd actually love to see an interview from baeko or angel eyes - lol, they'd be first on my list
And then have like a 60 second interview where you have the weirdest questions to ask some random person on P2L... lol who knows how wacky those answers could become

Bug your idea of only the best thread's is kinda ok but also could prove to come across lazy. By this I mean it will repeat the top 5 for some months until another thread is rated above it. Could prove an annoyance.

May 3 2007, 06:13 AM
It doesnt necessarily have to be the top 5 viewed or rated but Faken's personal pick of the top 5 most interesting threads since the last newsletter. Maybe also have a "wierd and fun link" at the end just for amusement value, something crazy yet amusing.
How often are you planning to send it out, weekly monthly? (or Daily!

It would be neat to have (when completed) the contests off the Publishing System. Like list the upcoming ones and the winners of the past one.

Maybe it would also be neat if there is free space to show some members designing the same thing...let me elaborate.
I get the Photoshop Layers Magazine and in every one (I think every one) they have some type of project (website, magazine, etc.) where 2 or 3 different designers all re-vamp the same thing. Neither of them see what the other has done until it's published and next to their work is also a write-up about the designer.
Would be cool to choose a couple different members every time and have them do the same sort of thing.
Just a thought.

Wow lots of great ideas already. I also like Archangel's idea becaus It would act as a type of contest at teh same time and the prize like already mentioned could be like a free 50 clicks on your ads added in your thing kinda like the tutorial thing. Also the interview thing would be good but I know how much work that is and really it would all depend on how often you have these things. Like once a month would be great I would say becaus sometimes if its weekly it's just borring becaus not every week has that much interesting things that happens and making an interview every week would be very hard. and one of my ideas would be to have like one or a couple pictures selected from the art gallery that are really nice sp that more people can see the great artist we actualy have in this community.

Knowing the ins and outs of what makes P2L would be nice. Like a staff snip of text where they discuss what they have been doing around the site.
Random (Or staff picked) tutorials.
A button that makes you tea/coffee/hot chocolate... whatever.
I'd subscribe!

Wow it's that newsletter you said you would have soon when you wrote that promotion article ages ago

. I think I would like to see free ads (maybe just grabbed from the for hire forums), I think the contest is a great idea - maybe for ad points etc -, a cartoon or something as I am sure there are many artisits who would volunteer to do this and I agree you need to have interviews, maybe with top tutorial writers.
Also if you include a tutorial it would be a good idea to make it a tutorial everybody want's that's exclusive to the newsletter as that will mean more readers etc. It might also bring old members back to the site for more.

Also building on what
Archangel said about the designer's re-vamping something, maybe every 12 monthst the three designers from each month could go head to head in a yearly comp

.
Just an idea.

I'm at work scanning the magazine as I'm typing (okay, I'll do it write after I'm typing) to get online and give you peeps and idea of how they do it. Granted...they take up a lot of space, but it could be downsized a ton.
Edit: Here's a PDF link showing what how they do it...explains it better than I could

Sounds neat. An idea to consider might be one or two featured "quick tips" that are related to tutorial topics on P2L. Just fast little things that don't need much text to explain, like "Use the Save and Compact feature in Flash to avoid FLA file bloat," or "How to manage a huge number of layers in a Photoshop Document by creating intuitively named layer groups," stuff like that. One or two of them should take up about a half a page, and it would give the newsletter some good filling. A client of mine runs a newsletter from his website, and he always includes a guest article in each issue. If the article is long, then he breaks it up into multiple parts across two or three issues.

Highest view tutorials - Weekly
Highest view tutorials - Monthly
Highest view tutorials - Overall
(same with rated, although the rating system isn't as well used as it should be.)
featured site (different than the front page ones)
Weird Things round' the net
Buzz in the industry
Buzz around p2l (obviously haha)
Random art (let us submit some of our work, and randomly choose and put it on pages everywhere)
Featured Artist (P2L member)
Featured Artist (someone else?)
If you need people to review and choose tutorials for reviews, I can write pretty good reviews. Review. (sorry) I can even write some articles, and maybe a tutorial here and there JUST for the magazine.
Just lemme know, and I'll keep adding to this list of ideas as I think of them!

Archangel's idea is awesome. I totally second that.
Maybe something to the extent where every month or so, the newsletter focuses on a certain topic and each week within that month, there's an article and other content related to that specific topic like a download or tutorial (or two), etc.
Topics like:
photography
print design
3d animation
website design
etc
etc
I hope that helps some, if any.
Maybe weekly interviews with owners of some more popular (and cooler sites)

Maybe have something off topic from web and design stuff. I'm sure we have alot of members that have other talents. For example, music. Maybe have a section for members to showcase their music.
P2L member submitted articles would be pretty cool.
Another idea would be to include what the admins think is the best entry from each of the Photography, Artwork, Sig and Website showoff/feedback forums. Kind of like a "cream of the crop" idea.
Or have the readers vote on five of the best entries to those forums, then showcase the winners next newsletter. Maybe include some info from the artist about how he/she created it, what influenced them, etc.
