This article has been floating around the internet for quite a while now, mostly on deviantart. But just incase you havm't read it, here you are smile.gif

Good article, and exactly what the title says, every Artist should read this!

QUOTE
1. It is not a "great opportunity" for an artist to have his work seen on your car/'zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a "great opportunity" for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a "student" or "beginner" in an attempt to get work for free. It's ignorant and insulting. They may be "students", but that does not mean they don't deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a "student" once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.[i]

100% true. This is also the reason I don't often browse the for hire forums on p2l. Its mostly people asking for free stuff, or offering $50 for a job. Right now I can make $50/hr from an average client...$100/hr from a good one (and I'm not one of the super duper top of the industry guys yet). What makes anyone think that I'd be willing to spend my time for 50 bucks....makes no sense to me.

This guy cannot be more right about what goes on in the design business. I've been ripped off and scammed before, and it sucks. Problem with me is that I cannot put a price on my work. I usually hesitate when I go to give a quote, and most of the time I give it to them for a price I know is low.

awsome read. thanks!

Truly amazing, kudos to you Craig! and thanks for posting this Adam. I'll be keeping your words in mind, as i was scammed before, and now im looking for people who will actually pay me for the job. Hmm... where would one go?

This was so true, especially the point about not paying 'beginners' or students for their work. I'm thinking of starting to design templates for some extra cash on the side and this has helped, thanks bigwink.gif

Nice. I'll read it! smile.gif

Honest and truly enlightening. Short, but possibly one of the most important pieces I've read in a while.

Very nice thoughts. If you can't work for no bucks than how can you expect for some one else. This thoughts will stop every one and will force to think..

That was a very nice article. I agree, even if a person is just a beginner or an amateur, he/she still deserve to be paid for what he/she worked for.

I also saw this on deviantart. I agree with everything written in that article. Every artist deserves to be paid for their hard work.
