ive got a fair bit of inheritance money coming my way so do i:

get a new camera

or

get a selection of lenses for the nikon d50 that i have

Considering you already have the Nikon, wouldn't it be cheaper to get the lenses for that rather than having to buy a new camera plus the camera lenses?
