There are multiple ways and multiple sites to do it for you. Googe ads, and advertising programs also. I heard netbux is good also. You get paid per search. But if you want my opinion, i dont like money recieved from the interenet. Thats just me, others have totally different views.

does anyone know how to make money out of an advertisment area in your site.

also, what happens if I am not a US citizen? Seeing as though I'm in the UK would I still get sent $'s? Is there a way of converting it to £'s?

I believe you would still get paid in USD.

There are many ways such as Travel Agents (I think!) who will convert it to GBP

how about paypal. That converts it. As it really makes no differnece to them.
