Camouflage Paint Tutorial

Camouflage Paint Tutorial

Ever wanted jungle camo on your car/favourite object? I figured out this really neat (and easy way) to get about it while i was converting an AMG merc into a gun platform (WIP). First thing, some ground rules, the car/object has to to dark, the tut only works with that so if you’re chopping cars, if it ain’t a black/near black car, desaturate, darken it, then try this :D

I’m using the same car i’m working on for this tutorial.

First off, get this brush, it’s a cloud brush set, but it’s exactly what you need for this tutorial. I’d link to the owner, but i can’t find him, and netiher do i remember where i got it from, so s0ks, props to you for this brush set.

First off, load the brush, if you don’t know how to:

1] Open the brush tool
2] Click the down arrow next to the brush selection
3] Click the right arrow on the upper right and select Load Brushes
4] Load the s0ks

Note: it’s good to keep a constant copy of the brushes you use in a set folder, so you can know whats loaded, something which i fumbled :\

Okay, after you’ve loaded the brushes, make a new layer and select the second brush, the one that’s size 128. Load these colours (or something similar) into the foreground and background (doesn’t matter which): #E5D213 and #2F9B00 (you can make the green lighter if you want)

Should look like this:

Now, make the green colour the foreground, and colour using that brush all over the body of the car, just get it all in, you can cut it later (if you’re chopping, you probably already rendered it). Next, change the layer blending mode to Soft Light.

Note: Include the grille in the colouring, it’s always good to have camo paint all over the body, and the grille adds to the army effect.

Then, on the SAME layer (make a backup layer of the all green, you might not want to redo it), change the tan colour to foreground and draw some lines across the body at an angle, in one way and some random blotches along the top, just make slightly lengthwise blotches and make sure they don’t come near each other. Now change the layer to Normal to get a better view of the next step.

Go to the Filter Gallery and under Artistic, select Cut Out and use these settings:

Now change it back to Soft Light.

Now it looks awesome doesn’t it? Now all you have left is to use a layer mask or the polygonal lasso tool on the paint (ie remove the bits you don’t want and leave the rest) leaving only the body coloured, and voila!

This is the one i’m using atm on my WIP, I added the paint to the rims cos it just looks good to me, don’t forget to play around with this tut’s settings, there are many possibilities:

End note: I left out a lil portion on the front bumper in the sample, don’t make that mistake :p Enjoy!

  1. nicely done..

    thnx

  2. Nice tut man ! I thought it was more difficult to make a camouflage like that. Would there be other ways to get the same final result?

  3. Yes. You might also try Vanderlee’s Camouflage plug in, available, free, here
    http://www.vanderlee.com/plugins_camouflage_features.html
You can choose the camo colors for your pic and then use Photoshop’s Fade command from the Edit menu to adjust opacity and blend mode.
Dieu vous bénit toujours, toutes façons,

  4. THX for the nice tutorial !!!

  5. I got to the 3rd pic from the end but am stuck on how to render the paint, what does this mean plz?

    Cheers

  6. ‘Rendering’ just means cutting out all the excess. You can do this using the polygonal lasso tool, just select the bits you don’t want, and press delete and what remains are only the areas you want camo’d.

  7. Thanks guys!

I will give it a go now, thanks too to the auther for updating that..
