Howto install gnome-do in Ubuntu Hardy and Gutsy

Want to listen to some music? Simply type “play beatles.” Do provides instantaneous, action-oriented desktop search results that adapt to reflect your habits and preferences. For example, if you use Firefox web browser often, typing “f” in Do will launch it. Or, if you visit The New York Times webpage often, Do will open it if you simply type “nyt.” Unlike other search tools that present search results as flat, homogeneous lists, Do provides familiar graphical depictions of search results that assure you that your intent is being realized correctly; searching for “mom” will show a picture of mom, and searching for “beatles” will show a Beatles album cover. Do has many more powerful and exciting capabilities that must be seen to be appreciated.
First you need to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
add the following lines
For Hardy Users
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu hardy main
For Gutsy Users
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/do-core/ubuntu gutsy main
Save and exit the file.
Update the source list file using the following command
sudo aptitude update
Install gnome-do using the following command from terminal
sudo aptitude install gnome-do
Using gnome-do
If you want to open gnome-do go to Applications—>Accessories—>GNOME Do
Once it opens you should see similar to the following screen
If you want to change some settings for this click on top right corner select preferences
Gnome-Do General settings
Gnome-Do keyboard settings
Gnome-Do plugins here you can enable,disable and configure plugins

Hi there, I just started using Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago, so I’m still relatively new to the scene. Would it be safe to assume that Gnome-do for Linux is kind of like Launchy for Windows?

I don’t get preferences there, just About Do, Open Plugins Folder and Quit. Am I special?

That is because you have most likely installed the version in the main ubuntu repos. Solution:
sudo apt-get remove gnome-doThen follow the given instructions from step one. If you follow the given instructions, you will get the version from the new repo that they have you add.
The new version has the preferences and such.

I also have the same problem. Preferences are missing and the plugins folder is empty.
Please advice

Yes Gnome-Do is a launcher application, similar to Launchy on Windows. It seems to have a lot more functionality than the in-built Gnome Deskbar.

Fr33d0m: lol, r u using hardy? I added the gutsy repository by mistake.
sudo apt-get remove gnome-do
edit /etc/apt/sources.lst, replace gutsy with hardy
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-do

If you search for gnome-do in synaptic packet manager, do you see “current version: 0.5.0.1.0~ppa1~hardy” ?
If not, press CTRL+R and update to that version.
I think this may be the problem :-s
