If you want to became a real 3D games programmer , you shoul'd control 100% languages like :
DirectX
OpenGL&OpenAL
you can search for guides in the internet and learn from it .

ummm.... i havend done much coding, but i do design 3d models such as weapons and characters and i have made few scenes and i guess u can call them levels.... to the point, i have used 3d studio max and i know and have worked wiht a little with max script. now i may be wrong but i think u can use max script in 3dsm to code the game engine or atleast make a character or weapon that can be controllled by game engines with max script....
PS: i know that 3dsm has the max script but i am not sure that other 3d modeling appz have those scripts... so u have to check on that

For tutorials in OpenGL I suggest going to this site, http://nehe.gamedev.net/
It has awsome tutorials and starts with the basics and gets advanced all the way to lighting shading, smoothing hills and creating objects and such in openGL programming and nothing more, I didnt think openGL was able to do all that until I did a few tutorials XD
