You can see thousands of tutorials on metal text, but it is different because i am going to make gold from this steel!

1.CREATE A NEW DOCUMENT IN YOUR FAVOURITE SIZE.FILL THE BACKGROUND WITH A DARK GRADIENT,BECAUSE IT WILL GIVE A GOOD EFFECT.YOU CAN TRY MY GRADIENT AS SHOWN BELOW.

Posted Image

2.TYPE YOUR NAME OR ANYTHING IN A GOOD LOOKING FLAT LETTER LIKE VERDANA OR ARIAL.TYPE IN ANY COLOR & GO TO LAYERS>LAYER STYLE AND APPLY THESE SETTINGS.

GRADIENT OVERLAY MUST LOOK LIKE THIS

YOU CAN MAKE THIS ONE BY ARRANGING THE COLOR AS SHOWN BELOW

#2A2A2A
#87919A
#222222
#AFB3B6
#000000
#8D9BA9
#131313
#7F8D9C

3.YOU CAN APPLY ANOTHER SETTINGS LIKE GLITTERING TO GETTING MORE REALITY.ANY WAY AFTER SETTING THESE SETTINGS LOOK AT THE TEXT.IS IT COOL?

Posted Image

FOR MORE EFFECTS CREATE A NEW LAYER AND FILL IT WITH BLACK,CHANGE THE BLENDING OPION TO SOFT LIGHT TO MORE REAL LOOK ,OR CHANGE TO OVERLAY TO MORE DARKY! BUT IT IS OPTIONAL.IT WILL LOOK LIKE THIS!

Nice, but i would perconally add some noise then apply the motion blur, maybe apply some brushes then to add wearing.

Metall looking?- Yes
Real?- Nah

As goes for all materials and objects, they have a hard time to look real when taken out of their enviroment. Your text contains 5 specualrs and 4 shadows. Meening in that metals environment there are 5 different lightsources casting soft blue light from affar upon the metal witch is reflected in the angle of the viewer. Plus the other strong light that is liting the edge of the letters but do not light the background equaly.

What im saing is that when it comes down to metal effects, how "real" they look is dependant on the environment in witch they reside and how the lighting actualy match up with the other components of the image. In a pitch black room any metal is equaly pitch black and in a room where no green light is emitted the metall can not be gray. :P

Look at my signature, i add noise no a grey background then applied a motion blur, then brushed on some random patterns and set the opacity to about 25%, look pretty real right

You missunderstood, sorry if i where unclear. :( What i am pointing out is that materials and in particual metal and reflectie materials have a hard time to look like the real thing when done from specified values. Your Steel text and its colours will work exelent on lets say a homepage where the colourset is very dark unsaturated blueish and souch, but would just look completly wrong in a homepage with a light-orange/red/pink colourset. Its like the saying "Give a man a fish and he will be fed for a day, teach a man to fish and he will be fed for his life." It would be better to teach people the theory behind the effect so that they may customice and use it as they will rather then to give them a static settings that create a effect that only works sometimes.

Also MR_LAGI, That Signature you have there, could you tell me where is the light comming from? You have a srong one going across your background from the right. But all the speculars of the holes and other components use the light from a source coming from the top of the image, a blue orb that sends out white light not affecting the pitch black area just above, and the wires arent affected by any light at all.

To be honest, Photoshop is crap att handeling reflections and glossyness and faking metals require both a good eye and serious thinking. To be left for 3d apps for the best results as its a mathematical operation. Seeing the metal applyin its enviroment as its texture is what real make you beleve its metal.

Thease are some PS made examles i made trying to prove my point. Not perfect but PS alone will never give you beleavable mettals unless you hand draw them and take unessesary quantetys of time to study and go back over and over again.

Colouring, speculars, reflection and shadows. All are enviroment dependant and should be custom made for each purpose, IMO anyway. :)

There are optics involved and that is indeed a branch of physics. but still, there are just so many things to this that the best thing to do is to do and do and do. Then look and think, does this match up? Looking again at the middle picture i made with the orb there are 2 faults as i see it, the very bottom of the orb is not as dark as it should be when compared to the shadow and the other thing is that the scen have 2 lightsources, as for the dual speculars on everything, but the orb have only one shadow. I learned a gr8 deal form using reflective materials in 3d apps seeing how they interact with eachother, their lightsources and other objects.
