Microsoft changed the way ActiveX controls work in Internet Explorer. The change affects all interactive ActiveX controls in a web page. In particular, it affects any Flash movie (SWF) content in a web page. This change is in response to the patent claims by EOLAS regarding applications that can run within a web page.

This also affects the following Active X controls:

Adobe Reader
Apple QuickTime Player
Microsoft Windows Media Player
Real Networks RealPlayer
Sun Java Virtual Machine

When do these changes apply to IE?

On April 11th 2006 a new version of Internet Explorer was distributed as a mandatory download. New computers that ship with Windows will also include the ActiveX change. Microsoft is offering a one-time "compatibility patch" that will be deployed like a hotfix to let users turn off the changes through to June 2006. During the grace period, Microsoft is recommending that the temporary hotfix not be applied to all machines because another IE update scheduled for June will override all changes.

i think the new explorer is a drag for flash web sites because now we have to mess around with java script to embed flash content for us to not get that "click to activate" s**t

the change has already occured.

If you look at just about any web site with flash, you might notice that you have to 'Click this object to Activate' before it is usable.

there have been some javascript workarounds to this though.

God bless those JavaScript genius... people. :D

Lucky for us Firefox users, we're just as oblivious as anything on this, lol. Though now I'm getting into Flash, I'll probably have to learn that JavaScript work-around aswell. Just to be nice to poor IE slaves. ;)

This is kinda annoying, and still IE doesn't recognize, or can't load;
The automatic proccesed .html page, made by Flash 8.

there is a js file ready for download as also a command from the adobe site.. which embeds the swf via Javascript.. download that, and you have a problem less..

EDIT: I've posted the URL to the work-around a while ago on my blog, here the link to it.

http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/

A great way to embed your swf. Takes care of the IE problem, as well as version detects and optimizes your site for search engines (with a bit more work).

The script will replace a div (that could theoretically hold your non-flash website) with the swf object if the user has the required version of flash. If not, they just see whatever you've coded to be in that div. Search engine bots will not see the swf, but rather the non-flash website, which is a good thing. From the research I have done so far, this method is approved by Google, however, it would be wise to check it out for yourself as this can fall into the shady area of showing different content to the bots vs real users.
