how do you replace the index file of your website via ftp?
when i try, it keeps freezing up and blocking me out.

The obvious thing to do is just overwrite it, but you said that dont work... hm... maybe...
renaming it to like, index2.html and the nuploda your index.html
OR
upload index.php and delete index.html
does it freeze only when you try and do something with that file?

yeah, it also freezes when i try to mess with anything to do with index.

try deleting the index... then putting up a new one.
If it won't delete, do the other thing said above and rename it and then upload your .php one.
The .html will always take preference over any other index file (I believe) so that one must go if you want the .php to show as front page.
I know I've reiterated what's been said, but if it's freezing and deleting it and replacing doesn't work, or renaming and replacing doesn't work, then you may have an issue with your host.

Sounds to me like your FTP software is complete garbage, or the install is corrupt.
