In this tutorial (my first in about 2 months) we are going to be making a very strange looking text effect, i don't actually know if there is a name for an effect like this because i've never seen anything like it before so this maybe scary for people who don't like new things :p, im just kidding with ya but we will take it nice and slow anyway :). You are going to need the fon't thats in the tutorial pack however it does look good with other fonts. Ok now then down to buisness, your going to be creating this:

Don't forget to download the tutorial pack

File Download: Tutorial Files

Step 1 Make a document off anysize, within reason, won't need to be bigger than 500x500px. You can always trim the image when your done. Create a new layer by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + N, name it outline, we are going to use that in a moment. Before we can create the outline we need to type in some text, set your foreground colour to black by pressing D to change your colour pallet back to default. Then select the font tool by pressing T or select it from the pallet, set the font to Cheri and type away.

Then duplicate this layer and hide it by clicking the eye by the layer so it doesn't appear.

Step 2 Now select the layer you previously created called outline because are going to create an outline 3px away from the edge of the font, so start by CTRL + CLICK on the text layer, this should select around it. Then in the men go to Select -> Modify -> Expand... and set it to 3 pixels, press ok and it should change the selection. Press M to make sure you have selected the selection tool then proceed to right click on the selection and select stroke, you need to make the colour black and then set the opacity to 50%

After you have made sure the settings are the same as the picture above then press ok and we will add the inner stroke.

Step 3 Press CTRL + D to deselect and CTRL click the text layer agian, then go Select -> Modify -> Contract and then contract the selection by 1px. You then need to right click on the selection and press stroke just like you did previously, you can keep all the settings the same apart from you need to change the colour from black to white.

Your going to have something which looks like this.

Make sure the outline layer stays at the top!

Step 4 We now want to give the text that gel effect so we are going to add a bevel and emboss.

Its hard to copy the custom contour so do it as well as you can, you can get the style from the tutorial pack. Its best to tweek contours depending on the font, text or size of the objects.

You should have something which looks a little like this.

It looks like a nice gell effect however now we want to add those dirty spray/grunge elements which makes it abit more interesting.

Step 5 Select the duplicated layer and set it to appear agian. Set its blend mode to linear dodge. We are now going to add the white lines on the top using a bevel and emboss.

You should have something like this, its just an extention onto the gel effect making it more complete.

Step 6 Now we are at the final step, adding the the drop shadow.

So the finished this is:

Now you should have something close to the finished deal, i suggest you play around with brightness and contrast as well as levels before you call it a day but its different for each off us so i won't get into it. There are a couple off extentions on this like adding colour, if your going to add colour i suggest you start from the begining with a different colour rather than using a colour balance however they do come out with interesting effects.
