well, it will take some time to learn how to do this, even if your new it could be hard with a tutorial, also most tutorials have you draw the animal scan it and trace it in 3dsmax and mold it out of the trace.

To be honest, if you are new to 3dsmax or any program you are not going to be able to make something like a hand modeled dog even if you are following a tutorial. 3d apps arent photoshop where you can just follow a few simple clicks and replicate a result. I mean someone correct me if Im wrong, but modeling from scratch is something that takes a lot of practice on simple things before you get into detailed models. Starting on something like that may only discourage you...

Yeh i mean all i can suggest being a noob myself, it does take awhile to get to grips with the program, but! there are simple tutorials that help you to start making things on your own.
For example..
http://www.bluesfear.../3Dtentacle.php
This tutorial i followed and it showed me around quite good tools and it helped me to make my own version like this!

And after doing that, im on my way to 3ds max 7, but no way can i do anything organic like a dog..
If you are a complete noob who wants to model a dog, + Fur...Whoa! NO chance mate..

Fur done in ps and then applied wont look like fur once you get it on the model. As far as bones go you can make an IK skeleton, but still you have to deal with things like inverse kenetics and if you've never even used IKs before then you're in for a confusing mess. I have seen tutorials for making simple dogs, i.e. I had a book years ago for beginning modeling with Maya 3 and the tutorial for making a dog was 6 chapters long. 6 chapters!! That's step by step and it was still difficult to follow and I had been modeling for a while. I like your ambition, but maybe start out with a robot dog or something, with lots of straight edges to work with.
