Sometimes its not about the settings, is just about the timing of the shot, waiting for the right moment to capture, also, sometimes using just the standard settings on the Canon can pull of a great shot. Before messing around with the other settings, get used to using the standard functions, thats the only advice I can give, I hope it helps.
If you want to know, these are the settings I used when I captured this shot:
Shutter Speed: 1/640 second
F Number: F/16.0
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 100
