Not sure where to put this, I hope it is okay to put it in this thread, if not I guess it'll get moved to the right one ;) Anyway, I am wanting to get into some 3d modeling, and animation. So I was wondering how long it takes with dedication to get fairly good at it, and what is the best program for me to use starting out? I'd like to have Cinema 4D, but I think thats way way on up there in the price range, so anything else you could reccomend? I heard someone mention Swift 3D, and I looked it up, now is that a program by itself, or is it like a plugin to Flash or something like that? Thanks in advance for all the help and info.

okay, I thought so on that.... now did this post in the general help area after all? I was posting it in there, and then I figured I'd better move it over here, so I opened it up in a new window, and copied what I had already wrote and then exited out of it. Anyway, its where it needs to be. Anyone have any suggestions on the other ones??

no you dont, swift exports into flash, but you dont need flash the program to use swift, u just need flash player, and it still exports to dxf, and jpeg and all that stuff so flash the program isnt nessacary at all

Swift3D is an excellent bit of software if you're looking to start in 3D. It's got an intuitive work space and is brilliant for instilling the basics of 3D modelling (there's other nice features for more advanced users and the price is right too! :P )

There's no point spending wads on software you're not comfortable with...

C4D would probably be my next choice, just for ease of use and the high end effects and renders, but I'd leave Maya and Lightwave alone for a while (unless you've got a spare 12 weeks to go on a course to learn the bloody things ;) )

This is what you can do with swift:

Not bad for a cheap piece of kit.

Okay.... sounds like a winner, so how do I get the Flash player? Could I just buy Swfit 3D, and it come with everything I need?

Stu: Gosh! I just looked at that thread, and nope, I wouldn't want to start another one of them! Thats more confusing than anything ;) Thanks for the plain, simple down to earth answer here so far though to everyone.

bongoboy: Thanks! Now thats what i like, a straightforward good answer :) I appreciate it.

I would recommend Maya, I've been using it for about 2 years, maybe a bit longer, I'm not that great, but I can make what I want to make in it, to be a fairly good artist with it, about intermediate would take 4 years with alot of dedication to tutorials, exploring, and learning, I havn't used many other 3D programs so I'm not that fit to say wich you should use, I find maya to be best for me. Good luck with your 3D.
