I was unhappy with the quality of free icons these days, as well as the price of good icons. So I felt inspired to make some icons of my own. I will definitely continue the set, so long as someone gives me advice on these.

Here are the first few (64px):

and in 16px:

They were constructed in Illustrator, and resized in photoshop. Some of them have drop shadows that are cut off on the edges, but I'll get to cleaning them up soon. And I think the folder icon lacks some clarity; I'll get to work on that.

So... what do you think about them? What are their strengths? weaknesses? How can I improve on them to make meaningful, clear icons with continuous style? Are the meanings of the icons obvious?

thank you! ;)

I just added more icons to the set. Hopefully I'll get a few more in before midnight.

EDIT: I forgot the curvy glare on the page icon... do you think it needs it?

I just made a computer icon, it took about two hours... I didn't expect to spend so much time on one icon.

And I agree, the page is better without the gloss, though it is more interesting with the gloss when inside the folder.

I'll put them up on deviant art and my portfolio website when they are complete.
I've got another pair of icons up, this time it is a wrench (for tools, options, whatever).

What do you think would be a good symbol for art in general?
Maybe a Paint Palette? A Painting in a Frame? a Paintbrush? A photograph?

(by the way, the color scheme of this icon set was inspired by the windows desktop background called "bliss"... I'm thinking of calling these icons bliss or something. They do look happy, don't they?)

They look so happy that they were created by you :P

By the way, your wrench looks a bit bent :P

And maybe you could come up with a new name for them? Maybe you could have a two-word name, with Bliss in it?

I guess it is kinda bent. But I think it is pretty good compared to my reference photograph.

And I'm not really the best at naming these kinds of things, some help would be nice.

like at this angle : http://www.ixbt.com/.../CRW_6360am.jpg

When I try to view that image, I get a 403 forbidden error.

Really, really nice work. Looking forward to see more of your icons....

I have one question tough...
I don't really know the difference between photoshop and illustrator..
Why do you use illustrator?

I'm thinking about using this program too if there is a huge difference or if it is better than photoshop.

Keep up the good work

photoshop and Illustrator each have their pros and cons. First of all, Photoshop works on pixels and Illustrator on vector stuff.

I use illustrator for its vector value. It works out really well when doing things like icons, that need to be at multiple sizes. But photoshop (for icons) is excellent for designing icons specifically for certain sizes, it improves clarity.

Photoshop and Illustrator are really for slightly different things. It depends on what you're going for.

I personally prefer photoshop for other things.

How do you convert them to .ICO format?

They're awesome by the way. Easily one of the best sets of icons I've ever seen.

I think there's a photoshop plugin that you can purchase from iconfactory called Iconbuilder

Keep on making more

I will, once I get more free time. I've got a lot of work to do.
