1) Without sacrifice, without death, we would have nothing.

2) Our fathers were our models for God. And, if our fathers bailed, what does that tell us about God?

3) Don't let the things you own, end up owning you

All three are from one of my favorite movies of all time - Fight Club

I guess I can call this a quote. This is a quote from LAdder 49 which is my favorite movie.

Warning: People that have not seen the movie then do NOT read below. That will give way the ending

It's never an easy thing, saying goodbye to a brother firefighter, it's not. And this time, particularly is difficult for me because I watched Jack grow into a, well, into one of the finest firefighters I've ever known. He joined this department because he wanted to help people, who knows how many homes are still standing because Jack was there or how many lives were spared. He gave his life for that cause. We'll never forget you Jack. And we're better for having known you. But I make you this one promise, tomorrow when that bell rings, we will be back on the truck, because you were the bravest of the brave. People are always asking me, how is it that firefighters run into a burning building when everyone else is running out? Well, Jack, you answered that question by saving another man's life. Your courage is the answer. And today we will be as brave as you, by not mourning you, but by celebrating your life. So I'd like everyone to stand up and celebrate the life of Jack Morrison.

That is one of the best movies that has ever been made I think. I have an uncle who is a fire fighter, and he said that movie really hit home, he knew what as going on, going through their minds.

I really liked that movie too Kev, great quote too. Did you copy it off the movie, or was it written somewhere?

Also, I think it might be wise to put a warning on the quote, as it is a spoiler and it may ruin it for those who haven't seen the movie.

Added a warning.

Yes that is the direct quote from the movie.

adio38, That really hit home to me too. I'm not a firefighter but I have been put into situations just as bad. The last line in that quote is my favorite. I have used it in all speeches that I give when a fellow soldier has been killed in action. I never ask people to mourn a death. I ask them to celebrate this person's life. It will help you cope with the situation when you think about what good he/she has done and how other people are diffrent in a good way because of it. All good has a bad. And all bad has a good.

Syntex, thanks man. Its my own quote, one I thought up.
Kev, it must be hard giving that speech, specialy when you have to give it more than once. Sounds like your a soldier? If that is correct I want to thank you and all those who risk their lives. Its people like you that I wish I could get to know.

No beast so fierce but knows some touch of pity. But I know none, and therefore am no beast.
-Richard III (Act I, Scene II)

I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space
-Hamlet (Act II, Scene II)

And obviously I couldn't allow the absence of a classic...

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.
Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness,
for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children.
And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.
And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

-Jules, Pulp Fiction(1994) referencing Ezekiel 25:17

My favorite quote is from the Serenity Prayer ...

courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference."
