the pictures are quite stunning, purple lightning? wonder how it changes colour? Different magnectic charge ?

Tell your friend that he did a great job taking these. I really love how they turned out. As far as the color, it happens everytime I take photos of lightening. I think it has something to do with the type of visible light that our eyes can see (including the lens of a camera). When you see other cool colors in photos of lightening, most professionals will use different color filters durning an exposure. I've seen others that the photographer just used photoshop to add the colors.the pictures are quite stunning, purple lightning? wonder how it changes colour? Different magnectic charge ?

I thought it was like war of the worlds or something the way there were so many bolts going straight down to the water, like aliens were boarding there ships getting ready for an invasion

Here is the Exif data on these photos. This might help answer some of the questions on these photos.
Camera Model = Nikon D200
Focal Length = 16 mm
F-Number = F/2.8
Exposure Time = 43.8, 96.3, 130.9 sec.

the colour of the lightning depends on the air that it's going trough. different atoms/ions emit different wavelengths when there's a current flowing trough them. like there's different colours of neon light, because the neon can be a different "mixture" as well
