For a first, its fine - but dont expect to make anything out of a render like that.

The key to making uniqe renders is Deformiters Mainly Twist and bend.

Just extrude a sphere and add some bends and twist untill you get something cool.

How do I apply the deformiters? Do I just drag the object into them like I would a NURB?

Yeah, like:
(example)

Sphere
>Twist

Pretty much juist drag twist Right into Sphere and it will become a sub-object, you can rotate, move, and spin it as a normal object.

C4d isnt bryce, everything is set for YOU...nothing is done for you - its a 2000$ 3d program, thats what you expect.

You need to add settings to it, example:

I like the first one the best. Maybe you could put a bunch of them gathered together and make a cool picture. :)

Be sure your object is the parent (or sibling works too) of the deformer, not the other way around. That one always got me!
You can also change the shape when you do the matrix extrude. Just set the P and B rotations to something like 3 and 6 when you extrude. Here are two quick examples I made using the matrix extrude and no deformers:

Hope that helps!
